Comcast program teaches youth the lay of the LAN
by Kali Wyrosdic, Philadelphia Business Journal, December 17, 2010

Comcast Digital Connectors program students Jordan Washington, and Ernie Ross, showed off their community service projects for Project H.O.M.E. to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, on Nov. 19 at the Honickman Learning Center in Philadelphia.

A program launched this year called Comcast Digital Connectors is working with two Philadelphia nonprofits to help close the digital divide.

In the program, high school students from diverse and low-income backgrounds gather during after-school hours three times a week to learn how to network computer labs through local access networks, or LANs, and create video documentaries. The students then volunteer their time at various community organizations to help improve digital literacy in their larger communities, instilling leadership skills and the importance of giving back.

The training programs are conducted at Project H.O.M.E.’s Honickman Learning Center, labs in North Philadelphia, and at People’s Emergency Center classrooms in West Philadelphia.

The program was created through a partnership between cable company Comcast Corp. and Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit One Economy Corp.
